Some say it starts in Paia Town, some say just above Paia, and others say well above Paia. That said, part of Paia is sometimes claimed by Upcountry, Central Maui, North Shore, and even Road to Hana. Though the boundaries are vague, the ease of access is not. There are multiple transportation routes through Upcountry, including Maui’s largest highway, Highway 37, also known as Haleakala Highway. Other primary thoroughfares include West Highway 365 (Makawao Avenue), East Highway 365 (Kaupakalua), Highway 390 (Baldwin Avenue), and part of the Road to Hana.
Also abundant in Upcountry are 4WD roads, gated roads, and private roads, so be careful when following GPS directions, as sometimes the kind of road isn't clear. You’ll also find excellent real estate in Upcountry. The area has an inviting atmosphere similar to a small village with quiet neighborhoods and bi-coastal views. The homes in Upcountry are generally well-spaced from one another and sit on at least one acre, often more. Upcountry properties come is a wide variety of ages, sizes, and architectural styles.
