In Hawaii, Upcountry is not just a geographic area, but a way of life. The geographic Upcountry is located away from the shoreline on the Haleakala side of Maui. The area is comprised of Hailiimaile, Ulapalukau, Kula, Makawao, and Pukalani, along with some smaller rural communities. Most of Upcountry is agricultural, rural, and residential. Because it is inland, there are no beaches here, however, there is a long list of other benefits to choosing Upcountry as your next vacation destination, or your new home. The vibe here is much different than West Maui, Kihei, Wailuku, and Kahului; it is very country and not very city.
Like much of Maui, there are no precise boundaries defining Upcountry, so where it starts and where it ends depends on who you ask. Some say it starts in Paia Town, some say just above Paia, and others say well above Paia. That said, part of Paia is sometimes claimed by Upcountry, Central Maui, North Shore, and even Road to Hana. Though the boundaries are vague, the ease of access is not. There are multiple transportation routes through Upcountry, including Maui’s largest highway, Highway 37, also known as Haleakala Highway. Other primary thoroughfares include West Highway 365 (Makawao Avenue), East Highway 365 (Kaupakalua), Highway 390 (Baldwin Avenue), and part of the Road to Hana.
Also abundant in Upcountry are 4WD roads, gated roads, and private roads, so be careful when following GPS directions, as sometimes the kind of road isn't clear.
